Yeah that's good too . Surprinsgly this didn't take long to put together lol ! . If it bothered me I would have just washed whatever I could .

 

Nice idea. I had some metal left over from an HVAC project and just bent it in a round shape at the oil filter and creased it at the output end. It just drips right over the side into the oil pan. The metal just slides right under the plastic piece under the filter.

They can't void your warranty over you doing your own maintenance. A lot of dealers tell people it will but that's BS. They can only deny a warranty claim for that specific repair only if they can prove what you did is the cause but your warranty as a whole is still very much intact.

I took off that little plastic tray thing under the oil filter because oil would always drip behind it but I pretty much do what you did every oil change.

Also, invest into these two tools to make oil changes on your 636 a breeze.

OR .. use a K&N filter that has a 17mm nut on top lol . No no I know . I haven't had any oil drip behind the oil tray .

And I know that doing your own oil won't void warranties . But in most dealer views ... they'll find anything possible.to try and pin it on the owner . At least that's how it is up here .. unfortunately

 

I drop my oil drain plug and just let the bike sit while I'm doing something else. Bike sits for an hour or two draining. Then I take the filter off. I get some spill but nothing crazy like you guys are describing. One cloth and all cleaned up.

I didn't know until now that the newer bikes got the oil filter now tucked in the side like the Yamaha R6 does, just even worse than the R6 with being even more in the middle of everything and being messy with oil changes.

 

But the R6 you have to remove the shift lever rod out of the way... and you have that huge foam block under that too


anyways- something to deflect oil passage is always good- direct it to the pan and keep shit clean, better than a big ol shot of contact cleaner over everything afterwards

Stupid question because I am lazy to take a look at my 2012 and I am at work now....but out of curiosity are 09-12 models the same position for the oil filter?

 

most likely yes. My 07 has the same positioned filter.

Vstar 1100 you have to pull the exhaust off to get to the oil filter..

How is that for Yamafucked up engineering

 

My ZX-10R had the oil filter in the front at the bottom, necessitating the removal of both lowers. PITA, though obviously not as bad as it could be (judging by the post above; ouch). The position of the filter in my 6R is nearly perfect IMO considering that nothing must be removed to access it. All bikes should be designed that way...

 

Yeah the 2006 636's you have to remove the left lower fairing. not really a pain, just inconvenient .

the 2013's and other years where its on the side, we have to shake the engineers hand lol ! best idea
