The gas cap latch uses a spring to put pressure on the mechanism while it is closed. When the workings are dirty/old/corroded there is a certain amount of friction that occurs as a result.

It is always a good idea to use your other hand to push the body of the cap down onto the tank, as you try and turn the key. That will reduce the binding a lot, and allow the key to turn much more easily. When you get it open, spraying the latch mechanism's workings with a shot of WD-40, and cycling the mechanism (turn the key in the lock without it being closed on the tank) will work the lube into the places it was not before.

Welcome!

Push down with other hand. Once open, take cap off and get some PB Blaster, kroil, silicone spray and loosen it up a bit. Also, make sure the sure the surface that latch catches on is free of gunk. It gets rough. Make sure nothing gets in tank if you this with cap assembly on the bike.

Also, get a keyless cap off Revzilla, Motosport.com, etc. That's what I did.
