Do not patch a motorcycle tire.... Ever... EVER! Do you hear me...!

To be safe and also do it correctly like most of us. You'll have to purchase a new/used tire.

 

A 150 dollar tire isn't worth the RISK of a blow out. I've ridden on a plugged tire for 100 miles or so. After that, I couldn't help but think what would happen if that plug were to separate mid-lean or at high way speeds. Remember that its not worth the damage it can pose to your bike. 150 dollar tire costs less than getting ONE fairing replaced. Remember that.

You can have a plug/patch installed, but I would be careful and it depends on where the hole is.

If the hole is close to the center of the tire, you are probably ok. If it is closer to the outside edge, I would replace it.

 

I believe they CAN be patched but I wouldn't want to leave a repair like that. Just replace it, bike tired aren't that expensive, especially if you already need a front. 2CT's are great tires whether you lean a lot or not

 

Not 100% sure on this but I heard to NEVER patch a motorcycle tire. The speeds and heat are much too much for the patch to hold and think about the amount of force you're putting on that contact patch when knee down in a turn. I would highly recommend just buying a new tire but I may be wrong.

 

Welcome. I would never ride with patch ...what you did in emergency fix that is okay to get you home but do not ride it with any type of patch ....get new set as you said you are in need of front tire as well.

Looks like I'll be investing in a new set of tires, probably 2CTs.

How much do you usually pay in labor if I drop the bike off for a front and rear at a local shop ? Tire price itself looks pretty standard for the 2CT.

They way I do it, is I buy the tires and take it to a small shop to get them put on. He charges me about $80 but he's cheaper than most dealerships/shops.

So I really can't give you an average

I plugged my rear tire twice...still holds in air. the holes were in the center of the tire and ive had no problems since then. Because you already put slime in the tire i would replace it. Herd that stuff is dangerous

To me not at all. You can buy each 2CT on most motorcycle sites for 160 and the front for about 120. I'd be willing to pay 30$ extra to mount each tire so 60$ total. All together shouldn't run you more than 350-370. Or at least that's what I paid for a Pilot Road 3 (which is an upgrade from the 2CT) in the front and a 2CT in the back.

I know everyone says tire matching is important but the Road 3 gives me a really controlled feel even when it's wet since they have that new design for it.

 

Any way you can put the bike up on stands and bring them the rim and new tires? Its always cheaper for me that way

"$424 for a set of 2CTs installed sound good" not to me ...2CT's aren't any better from my Q2's and I pay $300 installed! $250 for tires and $40 for installation.

 

Often times a shop will have 2 prices:

1 price for a loose wheel (you take it off the bike and bring it to them)
1 price for you bringing in the whole bike.

The loose wheel price is usually less.

 

Depends on your riding and the hole. Lot's of cruiser use tubes (spokes) so I can't imagine how putting a tube it it would be an issue for bopping around town. I am not sure I would feel ok with a plug in a front and have no idea about patching a tubelss from the inside. But of the tread is good and you are still just learning and not going extreme just throw a tube in it would be my thinking.

 

I did pick up some stands so I'll have to watch a few videos and see if I can take the wheels off my self, can't be to hard. I've always done all my own work (car). I'll call a few other shops around to see if anyone can do better.

I thought it was a good deal for $95 to have them; remove the wheels, mount & balance and put them back on the bike. That was at the dealership too.

 

they wanted 175 if I brought the tires in >_<

 

You take the wheels off you can bring them to my shop in Quincy and ill charge you 20 bucks then you can run down the street and get them balanced for another 20

 

I got a set of Power Pures for about $280. This was at a track day day inOctober, but that covered purchase, mounting and balancing. Note the wheels were off the bike. Only thing was I had to take the old tires with me.

 

Ok, so im going to take the rims off myself and bring them into a shop. I found a place in chelmsford, ma that will do them or 30$/ each. Just need to decide on the tire. I was looking at the Pilot Power, Pilot Power 2ct, and the Polit Power 3. I am a new rider so I don't think I will get into any wicked leans. However I do have a front tire that is down past the wear bars and i really want to start leaning more and as a new rider and I dont't feel comfortable doing it on a worn front (LoL).

Any recommendations for new rider tires ? If I get 2CTs will I ever use the dual compound or will a new rider not get low enough (normally).

 

I got a hole in the first month of new tires life. ugh. but I just put a plug in it.

 

If you're in lowell I can probably help you yank the wheels off. We mount/balance tires as well but I don't know what they're charging right now/when we have availability, normally we just swap tires for ourselves. If you're on NEStreetRiders hook up with TrickyMike in Chelmsford, I think he charges $20/wheel.

And I rode on a patched tire for about a thousand or so miles and had no problem, ended up getting a really good deal on some pirellis so i swapped them out.
