does anyone have experience with plastic welding on their ABS plastic fairings? it seems like not matter how hot or cool I set the welder it just burns the plastic instead of it getting soft and tacky. when it burns the plastic looks like its about to get soft then bubbles and burns. i am assuming it just gets too hot. to help this i would give it some heat until it looks about ready to get soft then take the heat off and add heat as needed to keep it at the melting point but no matter how hard i try it always burns.

im very good at welding metal and heat control when it comes to that but this is getting really frustrating. any advice?

also, the melting temperature of ABS plastic is 220F. More than one plastic welding source lists the welding temperature to be 550F. why is the welding temperature 2.5 times the melting temperature. is this why my fairings are burning? this is the most frustrating thing ive ever run into haha.

i used about 400 degrees to do mine. you have to keep moving the tip at all times. worked great for me
