Passenger Footrest Block Plates?

Hi guys,
I'm planing on removing the passenger footrests as I never have a passenger on my bike (wife is scared to ride on the back of a sports bike hehe). Bike is a 2009 zx6r.
The block off plates for the passenger pegs are are extremely expensive and I just can't see myself spending $60 a pop, $120+shipping and 13% tax on little aluminum plates.
I've come up with a couple of ideas for a DIY, but my most favored thought that's crossed my mind is to get 4 of these from Lowe's:
The diameters of these plugs range from 1" to 9/16" so I should definitely be able to find a plug that will fill the hole (see attachment). They are $2.99 for a pair. This way it will still look neat and tidy and won't have any holes on the bike.
Is there are reason why people buy the block off plates, or is is completely cosmetic? Maybe the allen key screw serves a purpose to hold something else on the bike behind the pegs that I can't visually see?
What do you guys think? Am I on the right track?

Yes you are...I bought them for my bike and they fit perfectly once you find the right size.

Any specific length of the M8 bolt? I tried putting the stock ones back in but it left me with a gap.
Thanks!

Don't know. Just measure the ones you have and subtract 5mm. I left mine blank. It didn't bother me.

Why bother, just take the pegs off and leave it
