The dealer likely sold it as a track or stunt bike. I inquired about the possibility of some such thing at a local dealer when I was looking for a track bike and I was told it was possible. Whoever bought it lost it for whatever reason and they're probably not getting it back. Sucks to suck. Go get it OP.

But even then, the dealer's name should still be on the title from when they took possession of it on the trade-in. So at the very least it should be tracked back to that dealer, not the OP. But yeah if I was the OP, it'd give it a shot. Nothing really to lose. It's either gonna work, or it doesn't. If it doesn't you just don't get the free bike.

No not really. When I inquired I specifically inquired about buying a bike with no title, which means the dealer wouldn't need the title, which means there are situations where they wouldn't bother getting a title.

Ahhh yeah I can see that. But still, sounds like some shady stuff was done by this dealer. It's one thing to sell a bike without a title to a dealer, as a track bike/stunt bike or whatever, and they'll take it for cheap....and another to give it as a trade-in in excellent condition WITH a title, and then the title mysteriously disappears lol In this case it sounds like the dealer definitely had the title at one point, which they should've transferred under their name upon purchase. Why wouldn't they do that?

I agree, my thoughts being that it is possible someone specifically asked for this type of arrangement and the dealer obliged. Someone says "Hey I am looking for a pristine bike but I don't want to bother with the title because it'll never be street ridden" or something. Saves the dealer money on transferring the title I'm sure, saves the buyer money, maybe even done entirely off the books for whatever reason.

Who knows.

Point is I'd go get it lol

Your trade/sales receipt from dealer would prove the bike is NOT yours. If the bike is not claimed at impound, ownership will be transferred to the purchaser at auction.

Find out how they traced it back to you, or go to the dealership to who sold you. It's sound like if you do nothing, something may come up against you and if you claim the bike, something may come up against you. Get it off your hands unless you have a good plan, and it better be good.

This can easily have been a case where someone bought the bike and the paperwork hadn't been processed yet. Can't speak for bike dealers but many car dealers use a third party service to process the DMV paperwork. These are typically done in batches. As for the dealer not having it under their name, perhaps they don't process that immediately. Requirements for this can vary from state to state, but I do know it can be a different process and set of requirements for dealers to help avoid having to do a lot of transactions with the DMV. Again, this may vary by state. I can't say what the risk is for someone to claim this bike later, but if they do and the OP obtains a duplicate title, I'd say there is a good chance he will be arrested and charged.

This could be a possibility, but the OP stated that he traded the bike in 8 months ago. Now I'm not too familiar with how the police department handles this stuff, but I don't think it would take that long to process a recovered bike.

Also it would be nice to get an update on this.

Not much of an update, have been busy full time with retirement :-) Seriously cut trees down, worked in yard etc. Talked to the dealer, they were not too concerned as they have either sold or sent the bike to an auction. They did get a copy of the letter.

To be clear I have no legal claim to the bike as I have sold it (traded) to the dealer. I have copies of the paperwork so if anyone should come after me it will be vey simple. I sold the bike legally and am no longer the owner. Tomorrow I'm going to inquire of the police to see what the status of the bike is. My only interest is if the owner does not retrieve it from impound then it will be sold at auction. I would be interested in buying it at auction if the price is low enough and the bike has not been trashed. Part of me does not want to see my old bike trashed by someone. However if I felt it had not been terribly abused I would be interested in buying it at auction. Im somewhat curious as to the history of the bike. When I sold it it was a 2014 with 7,000 miles stock with the addition of a Ohlins race damper. For someone to have purchased the bike Im guessing they would have spent $7,000 to $9,000. Im amazed at folks who have that kind of money to throw away. At the same time I also understand a lot of folks never register their bikes or put a tag on them.

My expectation is either the legal owner shows up and claims or it will be sold at auction. Possible legal owner got caught up in something and left the bike somewhere and it got towed and they cannot get back to get it. I think storage fees can add up quickly.

I'll try and get an update Friday.

I cant get attached to a bike or a car. To me, its just a bunch of metal and plastic.

By processed, I mean by a dealership. The police have already processed this bike, but they are limited to the information that is in the DMV database, which may move at a slower pace.
