2006 zx6r , 7k miles

Just bought the bike ran great the day i bought it

All ive done is:

Stator cover and gasket ,

Oil change ,

Had my buddy at gilbane motorsports adjust my clutch to factory specs

Also i placed a jumper wire from the fuel pump ground passed the connector to my negative battery terminal , my fuel pump was not priming because of a previously burned ground that the previous owner tried to fix.

Any ideas on what my issue could be?

Im not good with electrical so i wouldnt know why my ground i made would cause this

Ecu overheating? I have a straight pipe on my bike so its not really very close to my ecu but who knows

A friend of mine suggesting my ground could be overheating my pump causing it to want to shut off. I didnt understand that.

I noticed today that it seems to only do it on hills. Like lets say im doing 35 in 4th going down a hill , clutch in for a second and coast then try to revv match and next thing i know she shuts off.

The other odd thing i noticed is at a stopsign today i was at an incline, she died about 15 feet back and wouldnt start back up on the hill but i rolled it flat and the fuel light stops flashing and shes back to life!

Anyone have any suggestions? All help is much appreciated. Im a car mechanic so i understand engines but im still learning about bikes they are a whole nother animal.

If you are a car mechanic then you would know where to start. Just because the engine revs higher and there are 2 less wheels and you are exposed to the elements. Does not change anything really. Not trying to be an ass or a dick but if you are a mechanic like you say you are, you should be able to figure this out. Or take it to a professional. I would first start by un-mickey mousing your fuel pump ground/wiring and get it back to factory condition in that regard and move forward from there. Check for proper voltage and resistance in that wiring. Start at the obvious first.

just cause I'm a mechanic doesn't mean i don't have weak points. where i work i do a lot of parts changing not diag. how would one restore it back to factory after its been altered>? besides buying a harness.

i wish i had a picture to show you.

apparently this problem is more common than I realized but it seems no one is straight forward on the solution, from any of the threads I found.

the other 2 wires on my fuel pump harness are slightly charred but don't look like they would be "bad". do you think I would need to replace all 3 wires?

She I fixed my one I went through all the wires looking for damage. When I found something all I did was cut the wire slip some heat shrink on and join the wire back together.

I think what caused mine to burn out was the cable kinked. There is a pretty sharp angle in the loom at this point.

See my ground is bare wire all the way to the connector.

I dont think i can clip and splice quite like that. Maybe if theres other damage too but my ground is toast. Im going to replace it with same guage wire , but cant seem to get the wire out of the clip, any tips?

What i have read is that its most common to happen by the gas tank and positive making contact

I had to replace the entire earth wire.
I used a very small electrical flathead screw driver (about 3mm head on it).
Push this into the connector and use it to push down on what is basically a latch to stop the wire from coming out of the connector.
It's not particularly easy and it's quite awkward but easier than replacing the entire connector

Easy enough i got it done , didnt have the connectors i need at the store so i used a wire out of my old broken headlight it had the same end as the one i needed and looked shiny and new! Hopefully i can get it back together tomorrow and seeif it solves my issue

As far as i can tell the ground wire is the only one that burned the other connectors all look good if i shine a light inside them.

well I used a ford Taurus harness to get the connectors I needed , soldered my connections and put in 2 new wires going to the fuel pump plug. she runs like a dream again. woohooo thanks for your help guys! I now understand wiring a little better, so I learned something.
