What's going on guys!?

This is going to be my first full season of riding as I bought my bike in November and didn't get much riding in because of Chicago weather but now that the weather is getting nicer I wanna get everything ready and prepare the bike for some long trips. :devious When I bought the bike the guy said he put new tires on it and although they look like they're in good shape I am kind of worried about something. As you can see in the pictures on the side of the tires there is some torn like rubber and I'm wondering if I should be concerned about that and what does it mean that the tires look like that. I'd really appreciate nay input from you guys and whether I should have them replaced based on this. Thanks in advance!

BTW the tires are Pirelli Diablo Rosso II

Tires are fine, a little blue but fine. I would ride on them. Do you know the history? street only? Occasional track days? The previous owner rode the bike pretty well.

It either saw some time on the track OR some idiot decided to sand down the sides to look "cooler" and get rid of the chicken strips and show off that they get "low" and lean. Doesn't look dangerous at all but that's just my uninformed opinion from far away.

If you are extremely worried, get new tires as it will be on the back of your mind and may affect how you ride and could get you in some trouble.
You're fine....most likely did some track duty. Should scrub itself clean after you ride it a few miles. I really would not worry about it if the tread is okay and the date on the tire is not old your good. It is very very hard to "Ruin" a tire. You can "Ruin" a layer so to speak....but you will be fine :)

Here is mine after my first trackday

EDIT: Here is an interesting read on tyre wear patterns: http://biketrackdayshub.com/motorcycle-tyre-wear-guide/

your fine, last rider just really liked to lean
That's totally fine, last owner looks like they had a decent pace but the tread looks like it has all kinds of life left :O
Perfectly fine. At the track with race tires we actually look for those little balls of rubber on the edge of the tire. It's a sign that rubber compound is still working properly. When those little rubber balls go away it usually means the tire is done and ready to be replaced. (at least for race tires at racetrack pace...street tires if your just commuting you probably won't see that much)

Ja... Someone either rode her hard and fast, or did some sanding... Check the pressures (every day all day) and go spank her.

Oh and don't worry about them scrubbing off... You will just look like a badass till they do, and imho there is no reason to ride that "close to the edge" on street.

What's with all the accusations of sanding? Do people really do that?

I saw a thread... Might dig it up and bump it... It may have been satire... But it was there.

Edit: and that led to an old robmarz thread... That explains what I'll be doing for a while...

As for that tire it looks way to uniform to be sanding, so I was mostly joking.

Lol it's serious business Preston. Quite a few wannabes do it to get rid of the chicken strips so they don't get teased by other idiots. Crazy tho that people actually take time to sand their tire

:crazy

Reminds me of this video when I hear y'all talk about sanding tires...:coocoo

Tires look pretty evenly worn but looks like plenty left. Previous owner def took them to the limits, or as others said could have sanded lol...I prefer to believe he/she just had skills.
Thanks for all the feedback guys I really appreciate all the answers and they all made me feel better haha but it's pretty pathetic that people sand their tires just to make them look a specific way. That's kind of sad haha but like I said thanks again guys and happy riding!
Squid way to get rid of chicken strips... haha

You may check the DOT of the tires. It is stamped on one side of the tire and should be 4 digits - the week and year when manufactured. 1714 means 17-th week (early May) of 2014 year for example.
I personally do not ride on tires older than 4 years. Car's winter tires should be used for max 3 seasons. Bike's tires even newer. That's not cheap to change so often tires but that's safety for me.

I'll see your archaic method and raise you 10x the efficiency with this up to date method

But that's not enough, you have to add a little FIRE to get the blue hue to look like heat cycles

From another forum:

You think thats bad....I knew a guy who sanded off the outside of his shoe and he would tell everyone he gets so low it eats up his shoe. He also filed the pegs.lol
I can tell you something even more squidly than sanding your chicken strips... a guy I knew bought a suit and then scuffed up his knee pucks and elbow pucks AFTER doing his tire

Seriously, why people go this far to look cool is beyond me. I don't care what people think of me in terms of "if I'm cool enough, a good enough rider, if I don't lean far enough", I just wanna ride, be safe, and enjoy myself...:O
