Hi ladies and gents,

I greatly appreciate the value of this forum, it's helped me a lot so far during my 2 years of 00 zx6r ownership, so I thank every contributor.

As my bike creeps up in mileage (at 69k) I'm starting to think about engine failure while riding. I've done a valve adjustment recently and stay on top of maintenance so there are no red flags but pretty much my question is... is it possible for the engine to fail and somehow lock up my rear/front tire? If so, has anyone heard of this happening? Worst fear is that happening at high speed on the freeway. Any mechanical expertise is appreciated to help me get a better grip on this fear.

Thanks,

front - no

rear - always possible, but very unlikey. I've seen a few dropped valves, etc and even they havent done that. You've more chance of the chain breaking and locking in the front sprocket and doing it than the engine failure.

if the engine does go, youll most likely just notice a noise and lack of power.

The motor is not connected to the front wheel in any way..... cannot have any effect on the front, ever. Wheel bearings, and brake problems are the only concerns with front wheel lock up.

The rear? You almost always get warning as an engine lets go..... loss of power, smoking, noises, if you don't catch it then, or don't notice the temp going up quickly, or hear the POP..... the motor may lock up. That could happen suddenly, and it may lock up the rear wheel....... there may be some skidding of the rear wheel as a result.......

Pull in the clutch. Coast to the side of the road. Count your blessings, and figure out what to do after that.
