Unbelievably, my stolen 2011 has been recovered after 2 years.

Just got the call. No idea what kind of shape it's in other than what the tow yard told me on the phone. The lock is predictably destroyed.

No idea if I can buy it back. It belongs to state farm now, and they haven't appraised it. I'm going to email my agent tonight to see if I'll have a shot at buying it back. ... Might make a good track bike.

Details will follow as I learn them. I sure wouldn't mind getting my ol bike back. .. If it's in good working order.

Wow! That's kinda nuts that it turned up after 2 years! Even if it's beat up, but you can get it for super-cheap, that would be alright, yeah? Keep us updated for sure :bigthumb:

Unless you told State Farm They can have it. It is still yours.
Track it.

Regarding posession, it was a total loss and i was compensated, so they own it. I may be able to buy it back, no details yet.

Perhaps in other states. I know here in CA. For example. My ride was a total loss. It is still mine as a salvage title. Just my responsibility to go get it. That is after being paid out by the insurance co.

Man I wish either of my R1's would get recovered.

Glad to hear you got it back though. If insurance paid you for it you will have to buy it back but that shouldnt be much and if its in any sort of good shape it may be worth it. If my 03 or 07 R1 show back up they are becoming track bikes immediately.

I did not know this happens. I just assumed that's where all the part outs come from...

Who's your insurance carrier? I've never heard of a insurance company paying out or the lien holder the settlement AND giving them the bike back.

Was it a partial settlement?

they will pay for repairs. they didn't pay him off for the bike. the bike was totaled. you have the option to keep the bike and have them pay repairs so you can salvage title it.

Progressive,Geico. Not partial.
alex, your case is different than the OP's.

his insurance company paid him the valued amount for his bike because it was stolen.

yours would have paid you the amount to repair your bike, not the entire bike's value.

pretty cool story, but I tooo would let it go .. Its gotta be In extremely rough shape.
Any updates op ?
No updates. According to the tow yard it is in good shape (besides the obvious lock damage), but obviously I'd want to see it and hear it running before trying to buy it. I don't even know if I'll have the opportunity to yet. Then again, that's assuming the tow yard knows what to look for.

I reckon you've already said your goodbyes to the old bike, let it go. Too many possibilities for problems.
Curious as to why an insurance company would contact a policy holder after so long?
They didn't. I was contacted by another party because, since it wasn't recovered, I was still listed as the last owner. Don't want to go into too much detail yet though until I know more.

With regard to whether I buy it back, I definitely haven't "decided" to, nor do I even know whether that's an option available to me. Right now, all I know is that the bike is no longer mine, since it was settled as a total loss and the title was signed over as part of that. As such I have no claim to it unless I am able to buy it somehow.

Regarding its condition vs. my desire to re-own it, don't mistake me: I am disinclined to buy used sportbikes, period. I think I've mentioned before that I would only buy a new one because it generally terrifies me how people beat them up. If I do have the opportunity to buy it somehow, I'll of course have to examine the plastics and frame sliders (assuming they're still on it) myself to see if it's been down. I know the milage that was on it when it vanished, so I'll ideally be able to see for how many miles it was beaten to death.

I don't know, probably nothing will come of it. Maybe I'm (probably, definitely) just being nostalgic, but I figure if I could get this one back really cheap, it might make for a great track bike. We'll see. Insurance made me whole after the theft and I have a perfectly good 2012, so I'm not sweating it, but it would be cool to have my old bike back.

I'll definitely update the thread when I find anything out for certain.

2 years is a lot of time to rev the piss out of a bike and never change the oil and ding the rev limiter all day. the thing can't be happy.

did you see how many miles they put on it in 2 years?

Nope, no info whatsoever. Like I said, I know almost nothing at this point... I haven't even seen a picture. Everything is hypothesis and conjecture at this point.

I appreciate the sound advice from everyone, but believe me, it's not like I'm charging blindly forward with my wallet extended... lol... More just being whimsical at this point. I don't even know whether it's going to auction or what.

One more edit: BTW hcky, you don't post as much as you used to, do you?

i occasionally pop in to see whats up, but i go through various phases of extreme busyness. just finished my training for federal protective services which took up a good chunk o' time. and just set up a new practice spot for my band and have been trying out drummers. and currently doing some strict training for powerlifting.

i'll be grabbing a new bike in the near future though if the new job works out quickly. most likely a new 636 :yes
