Soooo long story short. Had my bike stolen this morning and I went bat shit crazy. As I was making a police report I got called by the dept sargeant that the bike was recovered during a failed selling attempt by the thief 15 minutes away to ....get this ....an undercover cop lol....so I was the one in a thousand who recovered their bike in 12 hours...but the top of my triple tree and ingnition set up is destroyed. :(

Wow! Well that's a rare outcome for sure. We get an insane amount of bikes stolen here over the year.
I know right. Everyone said that I should get a lotto ticket tonight lolol
Mine was stolen in 2011 and not a peep from the cops since
Damn man now ur a lucky guy. Hope that thief got shot. Where did he jack it from anyway?
My brother had his bike stollen in Houston last year. The cops found it, impounded it and then sent him a letter 6 months later saying they had it and he owed $300+ in storage charges. The bike was/is a mess when he picked it up. You have about the best ending to a story that starts with"my bike was stolen..." I've come across.
Thanks guys I know right I'm like I need to go feed the homeless tonight lol and i stay in the bay area of northern Cali so this was a 1 in a million chances to have this outcome. Its parked at my buddies house who stays in a gated community 20 mins away now until I move in 3 weeks *woot woot* time to source parts!

No way man...you can't get a lotto ticket for the next 20 years or so - your luck's used up!

Seriously tho, glad you got it back and especially so quickly - that's a way better outcome than we usually see around here!

How the hell is that legal? I mean, if my bike was stolen I'd check places like impound on the reg just in case, but trying to foot a victim in this case with a $3,000 bill is absurd.

The only way I see that's possible is that someone either forgot to report it stolen or it slipped through the cracks. Either way it seems like it could easily have been taken care of. We aren't really getting the whole story here, I am sure.
Where was your bike parked? Reason I ask is because I'm in Hayward and want to get a general idea of where to be super careful when I park in the streets.

How did it get stolen? While you were sleeping?

Lol, this is why you carry insurance. Report it stolen and you'll either get 1.) Comp'd from the insurance company or 2.) Police dept will find it for you.
Except some people get raped on insurance and can only do liability. I know at 24 on my R1 my insurance for full coverage was like half of what the bike was worth was every year. So long as I didn't get it stolen in that time it was the same money spent.

Sadly one was stolen the day I bought it in cash and the other after 5-6 months.
Good thing the crook was caught and bike recovered...don't hear that often at all.

While having full insurance coverage is best - getting at least comprehensive as well is good especially if you don't have access to a private garage. Covers/locks only go so far to deter the scum.
