Riding reflections from big-freakin'-shug

So I've had the bike for just over a month now and the weather hasn't exactly been the most cooperative in terms of allowing me to tame this beast. That said, the recent 75 degree days have allowed me a bit more seat time and specifically today's last minute ride to the Blue Ridge Parkway gave me some time to wax all poetic and shit on my current progress...here we go - in no particular order

1) Cold beer is a really nice welcome home after a day of 100+ miles on the zixxer...several cold beers in a row are even nicer.

2) Harley riders are still the most likely to NOT wave at me when I initiate the ever-so-cool "low two-to-three finger wave"...bastages can go kick rocks for all I care

3) Just when I think I'm getting better at riding my motorcycle, I do something stupid and squid-esque. For instance - I'm pretty impressed when I come to a stop and I'm able to do the whole front brake-downshift-rev match thing...and I even make the noises WHILE I'm doing it...it seems to help. That said, just after a totally impressive sequence of gearbox changes, the next time I try the same thing - I'll forget to let off the throttle...and then I'll get my neck snapped back...followed by waaaaay too much fork compression because I've panicked and grabbed too big a handful of front brake. Don't judge me dammit - you've done the same thing, too...

4) I am infatuated with this bike. Seriously. Some mornings I literally can't wait to go to the basement just to look at it. I even talk to the damned thing sometimes...like, really talk to it. I noticed the tiniest rock chip on the gas tank the other day and you'd have thought the world was ending...I'm sure some sort of therapy is in my not too distant future

5) Riding a sportbike is TIRING...I'm far from Mr Olympia but I'm also not in bad shape by any stretch of the imagination - but muscling this bike around AND making sure to (try to) keep 100% aware of my surroundings takes it's toll on this old man. I'm hoping more seat time will remedy this...we'll see

And that's enough for now...today did begin with an impromptu trip to our local mountains, so a few pics are in order, I suppose. I only took pics at one of the overlooks because it's such a PITA to have to take off all the freakin' gear...so just relax, and be thankful

This was my first stop - about 70 miles in, so I was ready to stretch my legs for a few

The A* backpack is pretty handy-dandy for carrying all my assorted crap...and Glocks

This place is absolutely gorgeous during the fall...definitely making the trip back up when the leaves are in their peak season

I have the same problem, this morning went to my mom's for breakfast, her place is about 40 miles away and my back was killing me, and I am in good shape, i hit the gym 4 or 5 times a week. I have been working on the rev matching while downshifting and done the same thing and got wiplash, i'm probably not doing it right. i will check youtube to see if there are any tutorials.

also, i have noticed that the harley riders don't wave back and my theory is that they wan't to portray a rebel image so doing the salute or waving may seem beneath them since tbey are such badasses. in reality they probably go back home to do the dishes andbecause their wife treat them like shit. badasses on the street, little pussies at home.

No no no.... it's because it they take a hand off of the bars they'll wind up out of control and drop their $20,000 piles of chrome and 75 year old technology. :laugh

the more you ride and the better you get at it...the easier it will become. You will become more relaxed and to let the bike do the work.

And #3 is one of my favorites because thats how I love rollin up on any scene. The bikes sound so bad ass rollin in hot and downshifting while revmatvching.

And yes, I have made that very mistake or a varient of it....many times.

Awesome write up.

I get the Harley wave all the time. Hell, I've had to hold my hand out for a 1/2 mile due to 20 Harley riders all giving me the wave as they rode by deep.

Nice write up Shug.

I have the same problems with getting back on the bike after a few weeks off. The first 3 or 4 long trips end with my legs and back being pretty tired. :)

I absolutely love this write-up. Hehehe I'm too lazy to rev-match when coming up to a stop light, but I will agree that it sounds pretty bitchin'!

I have just finished a 100 or so mile ride and plan on cracking a cold beer just as soon as I finish a cool shower.

I talk to my bikes ALL the time. I have been known to go in the garage and just spend time sitting on them all... I believe somewhere there is even a picture of me kissing my 636 on the nose many years ago. They are the ponies that I never had when I was a kid... only better.

Infatuation is an understatement. Soon, as time progresses, you will become obsessed with everything about it... and your support groups will be your riding buddies and the other people who wave back at you... they get it. They, too have probably spent countless hours memorizing every curve, sound, imperfection, and angle of their motorcycles.

There is a reason you never see a motorcycle sitting outside of a therapists office. ;)

hahaha good stuff shug, You sound like you might be around for a while.

Maybe I can help ya a bit on your points, lets take em one by one,

#1 Yep a cold brew or two is good at the end of a good ride, But only 100 miles?
we gotta work on this.

#2 You got the right idea, Harley riders are the only snobs on two wheels, Fuck em.

#3 hahaha yeah keep working on it, & no Iv not done that.

#4 Hell yes bro, & this is why I say you may be with us (the two wheel fraternity) foe a while.
I talk to Joan every day, Every day spent with her is like Christmas.
Lots of people will never understand you or your love for bikes, But here you got like minded friends.

#5 It will come in time bro, Your body just needs to be trained to the new lifestyle.
Keep stringing those rides together, & you gotta get out there & put more miles under your belt/tires.

Welcome to the club bro.

I swear it started with just a ride to my parent's neighborhood...then I ended up on 130...which led me to the parkway...and back down 501...and back to my house

I swear the roads around here are just better...the parkway was every bit as awesome and well maintained as I remembered

roads in anywhere but richmond are good! parkway is amazing! roads are very well maintained for the most part. few areas that suck and a few gravel-filled corners, but overall nice. if you got any spare time in the next couple weeks lemme know and we'll go ride up there!

#4. I've got a chip too. Left side of the tank right on the curve at the widest point of the tank. It's only about the size of a pinhead, tiny really. But I notice it everytime I walk by, drives a man insane.

Dammit, man....that's EXACTLY where mine is. I got home from school and was wiping dead bugs off and noticed it. I ordered Kawi green touch up paint/primer/clearcoat from Colorite so we'll see how well it matches - I figure this won't be the last chip unless I just act like I'm riding the bike in my basement...lol
