What's up guys? I did a search and didn't come up with anything conclusive. I have a 2008 ZX6R with 32K miles. I'm running a Two Brothers Slip-on and a K&N Air filter (which I just cleaned about a week and a half ago). Just this past weekend I installed a Power Commander 5 (because I won a free dyno the week before and my bike was running super lean) and right away on my next days commute I noticed two things...my bike was running much cooler, which is def a good thing, and that my mileage took the biggest dump I've ever seen. Before the PCV I was getting about 160 miles to the tank, which in my opinion still sucks, and right after the install I got about 110 miles to the tank. I was running Dynojet's "Two brothers slip-on and stock or aftermarket air filter" map. Right away I decided it was prob time for some maintenance. Changed out the plugs to NEW NGK Iridiums, changed my oil to Motul 300V :naughty: and added new Engine Ice to the coolant system. Well now the mileage has improved but nowhere near where I feel it should be. I'm am now getting about 130 miles to the tank. Obviously this is all a result of the power commander and it's current map. I have not changed any of my driving habits so the "maybe you're throttling it more" response is out of the question. I do not want to get a custom tune done just yet as I am expecting to get a performance header within the next 1-2 months and $200 for a tune is not cheap. I read somewhere that for some running the same set-up as me, the "Akra slip-on and stock or aftermarket air filter" map has worked wonders. I want to verify this first or get anymore opinions before continuing forward. I checked out that specific map in the software and the numbers seem to be a lot different. Sorry for the loooonnnnggg post. Hope this helps others in the same situation.
Im no professional but I've had some 110s to the tank, although I don't ride slow, but I'd say that's ok. If your bike was running super lean then of course you will get better mpg because you're not putting enough fuel into the cylinders, so it makes sense now you've added more fuel your mpg has gone down. Lean engines do run hot which does also confirm you are now using more fuel because now it's running cooler. PC standard maps do the job but are known not to be brilliant and the best way to get your bike running right is to get it custom mapped. If I were you I'd leave it as it is, wait for your headers and then get the custom map. Then the mpg you get is the mpg you get, that's how your bike runs, deal with it
^^^I'm with this guy 100%. More fuel = cooler running temps. I don't have a PCV but I know it's better to be rich than lean and with their standard non-dyno map they're gonna be on the rich side for sure.
:dowhat I haven't seen 160 miles to a tank since I bought the thing....
I'm lucky if I get 115 before the fuel light comes on. I get about 60 miles before the light comes on at the track (WOT all day long). Best I've gotten in the last year of so was 37mpg... I was cruising at 70mph.... downhill.... with a 60mph tail wind. :O
You're going to need to get a custom map. It might help because with a downloaded map you COULD be running a bit rich now. Custom map would give you best of both worlds. Performance gains and decent mpg's.
Yeah, basically what PG said...also, just keep in mind that you can't maximize power output AND fuel economy...they are pretty much mutually exclusive :O
my 13' has been getting 50 mpg so far, on average. I commute mostly so I am hardly ever in the band so to speak.... I think this is my apples to your oranges though.
Sounds completely normal to me. I run an Akra slip-on with a K&N air filter and a PCIII and get 115 before the light comes on. This is with a custom map.
160 on a full tank? is that before or after the gas light comes on?
On my '12, my mpgs are pretty consistent. I get about 130 miles before my light comes on, and usually fill up at around 150 or so, with a little over half a gallon still in my tank.
I've also noticed that tire pressure has almost zero impact on my mpg, even when I run slightly lower tire pressures for when I'm riding in the canyons.
My pure stock '14 indicates an average 46 mpg on the gauge pretty consistently and that's with highway commute 5 days a week. With a 4.5 gal tank, I would guess the light comes on with 1 gal left in the tank. When the light comes on I'm usually near 150 mi. but I don't often get there with a 60 mi a day commute cause I got to fill up at around 120 mi to get to work.
Like I said, that's stock and barely 4000 miles on the OD. So if I added mods to get more power mpg is only gonna go done from there. I can see how you could get 160 on a tank (full to light on) if you were running real lean but when you tune it to get the power from those mods you paid for, it's just gonna go down. So just live with it, its what you paid for.
If you want more mpg, pull the motor and put a 50cc moped engine in it!!:2fingerlol:
32K Miles on the '09, and I am getting a very consistent 40 MPG. Stock gearing, OEM exhaust, K&N filter, OEM ECU. With that setup, I consistently have the fuel light come on with right at 140 miles consumed from a full tank. Roughly 3.6 (US) gallons to fill it again, and I am off to the races. That's two round trips to work.....
My light normally comes on around 130 miles at 40mpg if I've been having some fun. But when I ride with my Uncle on his Harley and slow poking around light comes on around 150 at 48ish mpg. I've got a Akra slip on (I'm assuming I have a custom map, bike came with the PCIII) and K&N air filter.
Awesome thanks guys! Very good info and now I don't feel so bad. Just thought maybe the norm was closer to 45mpg but guess not. I was getting 157 to the tank right when light turned on now after a few days I've noticed I get the light on at right around 130 so I'm happy. Guess that just goes to show how lean I was running lol. I'm pretty happy with how the bike is responding now though with a little more umph in the lower range. Now the only thing bugging me is there seems to be a little of a bog around the 7-8k rpm range. I haven't really been able to pin point it as it's very subtle but it's there. Weird. Just gotta wait to get a custom map though. Thanks again EVERYONE!
Seriously. My race bike gets about 8MPG. I will trade with you at any time
