Hey guys,
Thanks in advance for your opinion.
I'm new to this forum, but I've been reading the threads for a while.

I've been searching for a used 636 for almost 6 months, and still haven't locked in the right one.

I'm shopping mostly for 05 and 06 in the sub $3500 range, but I recently noticed that it is possible to find used 11s and 13s in the $4k-$5500 range.

Besides aesthetics, how much value does one get from the modern machine?

-Even the old ones have fuel injection
-power differences minor
-I've heard vague things about transmission issues pre 09?
-newer is lighter and more comfortable
-TC for rain/sand, and newer improved brakes
...

Or am I really just considering dropping another thousand dollars to get something that looks shinier?

It depends on what you like. I personally would go with an 09+ but I don't like the pre 09 bike look as much. I'm sure you can find a shiny 05/06 and a turd 09 and newer. I'd go with the cleanest and least fucked with bike you can find for the money. I would bet the performance is pretty close if just riding on the street. Racers can chime in on differences in power, brakes and suspension between those years and I'd assume the 09+ bike is better for racing. I just realized you said 11 and up...the 636 came back in 13 models to current year. My 2012 is a 599 and the best year ever:)

I have a 2012, and my buddy has a 2013 and a 2008 all in my garage....I've ridden all 3 and the differences are there. The 2013 has softer suspension which is more street friendly compared to my 2012 which feels more rigid/track ready. The 2008 is actually very close to my 2012 in terms of feel, and performance.

We Dyno tuned all three on the same Dyno and my 2012 made 112hp with a BMC race filter, gutted stock header, Pinebox link pipe and Leo Vince slip on using Bazzaz. The 08 made 114hp with a full titanium Akra using PC3 and the 13 made 117hp with a full titanium Akra and BMC filter using Woolich.

Oh yeah, I realized shortly afterwards that '11 and '12 didn't have 636 models!

Yeah, you're right - I'm no track pro. I kinda just want it to do everything and be vaguely (gasp) comfortable.

The suspension on the 09-12 models is very stiff compared to what most street riders actually need. The springs were changed in '13 to softer ones, along with mods to the fork valving. Compression is handled on one leg, rebound on the other. (That's the SFF, in the description.... Single function fork)

Honestly, the real challenge is finding a clean bike with few mods and regular maintenance at a price you want to pay. Mileage only matters if it hasn't been kept up with regular oil changes, and valve adjustments. Tires, replace with ~5K miles, chain and sprockets, ~15K miles. Battery may last 8 years or more, typically less.

Cosmetics get worse with miles and wear. Don't expect perfection.
