Hi, I'm new here currently in the Air Force stationed at Lackland AFB and this upcoming Tuesday I would be a owner of a 2013 zx6r. I joined this forum to "steal" ideas and looks from the fellows around here, also to learn as much as possible from people here. The Motorcycle is full stock with 1,0xx miles on it, so it would be a fun journey to mold it to my liking, thanks in advance and any advice would help.

I went through Lackland for Basic back in '81. :)

supposed to be some good riding in those parts.

Cardnial rule: Shiny side up, sticky side down.

Use the rubber to slow, not your skin.

the best modifications you can make for improving the performance of the bike/rider combination.... all falls on the rider.

Better training, better gear will pay the most benefits.... these things are truly better than we are, especially on the street.

How do you plan to use the bike? Sprited riding only, or will there be commuting back and forth to work, as well?

I constatnly use a magnetic tank bag to hold my base pass (CAC), my lunch, my phone, my wallet, spare glasses, and odds and ends. I have learned that I don't like using a back pack, as I crashed with a laptop in one in 2006 and tore up a shoulder, and broke ribs.... pretty sure the flat plate across my shoulders is what let the forces lever through my shoulder the way they did.

If I need to carry more than will fit in the tank bag, I use a tail pack. If I ever need to haul more than that, I will buy some soft saddlebags to keep the weight off of me.

You cannot have enough gear. :) Especially if you ride in an area with multiple distinct seasons. Hot, fooking Hot, and Blazing Hot don't necessarily apply, LOL.

Most types of gear are 'good' through around 20-30° F ranges..... if it works well at 100F you will freeze in it at 60F. 60F gear quits around 40F, gear good at 40 isn't much good at 30.... power is your friend, there. Same applies for gloves, boots jackets, pants.

Gear outlasts the bike.... don't get wrapped up in making everything match.

Commuting, also as of right now I have a good helmet, jacket and gloves.. looking for off-duty boots and a nice bag like the one you just mention. Thanks for the tips, fyi I cant ride until next month since the safety class required by the USAF is not until then. I would be looking to get more gear in the meanwhile
Some advice too, be careful what you do when you ride off base. try not to do stupid stuff, especially in uniform. I had guys in my flight/SQD who were standing on their seats and people from base saw them downtown and they got in trouble. Had to redo MSF course, give safety speeches in front of 100+ people and i think they got LOC's. One guy lost riding privileges on base but he was constantly getting in trouble with stuff for riding (excessive speeding)..Just be cognizant that things you do could get back to base.

Welcome and hope you enjoy the bike! Like everyone said, gear and proper training is very important!
as for bike modifications, fender eliminator and steering stabilizer come to mind. a new windscreen (double bubble, corsa, etc.) is also another idea.

i have LEDs on my '13 but some people think that is too tacky.
to truly make the bike YOUR zx6r, make modifications that you want.

steering stabilizer come to mind.
I wouldn't worry about that right now. He hasn't even taken the MSF course or have his license yet. I dont think its really necessary for him to go spend a couple hundred dollars on a stabilizer at this point.
