My New Baby.....The 05/06 636 story.

As some of you may have seen, I was riding a 01 ZX6R that I completely rebuilt from ground up. I put a lot of work into her but decided to move forward to a newer ninja and part ways with my beloved 01. I sold her to a friend that has been wanting it ever since I rebuilt her last winter. Ever since I got into riding street bikes only 2 1/2 years ago, I have learned many things from friends and the zx6r.com family.

I have always liked the 05-06 636 since day 1 so that's what I started looking for on the popular craigslist. I went and looked at two 05's in November 2014. The first one they wanted $3500 for with 17,000 miles. Was listed as "Great Condition". Well in the end it was far from that and a waste of my time. All the fairings were poorly spray painted and parts were held together with zip ties. Rear wheel had a bent lip and even after the bike was warmed up it idled high even after adjusting the idle. I passed on that pretty quickly. The second was in a lot better shape with about 15,000 miles buy seller would not budge from the $4000 that he wanted. I felt that was a little too high considering some of the things it needed done so I continued my search.

Then I called a guy that lived about 4 1/2 hours away that was selling a 2006 636 Garage Kept, very minor scrapes on the one case cover, needed only a couple normal maintenance things done. Bike only had 7,245 miles and only changed owners once. Price was set at $4500 but was negotiable. The seller cooperated greatly with me and told me everything I wanted to know and also sent me updated photos with a video to see how it ran before I made a 4+ hour trip. So on November 29th a buddy and I made the trip and I am glad we did. I immediately fell in love with the bike. It was just as the seller explained it to me. Nice and clean, ran great, looked great. There were only a few minor issues which were all common maintenance things. I informed him that I was not willing to pay the $4500 asking price and in the end we ended up agreeing on $4000 and he threw in 2 helmets. One an Icon Alliance and the other an Arai. So we went and did the TTT and we loaded it up on the back of the S-10 and headed back home.

Now for the pictures since they are the best part of a new purchase for others! :bigthumb:

Let me know what you all think. All in all I am happy with my purchase and have already upgraded the front calipers to the 08 Nissin's, installed a GPR V1 Stabilizer and bought a shift kit which is still waiting for warmer weather to install. there will be many more upgrades for her in the future!

Nice bike man. I had a similar craigslist experience while I was looking for a bike. Wasn't initially looking for the 05 636 but it was up for a while so I decided to go for it. Seller wanted 5k for it and it only had 1323 miles on it. We agreed for a much lower price and I fell in love with her.

I guess I just have good luck with Craigslist... Went to look at a 1997 Eclipse GSX, matched the description and bought it that night for like 4k. Went to look at an '09 250R, perfect condition... ran great... bought it that day for like 3k. Went to look at the ZX6R, decent condition, offered less than asking price because it didn't live up to the description but still was in great condition... bought it for like 4k...

Every time I have looked on Craigslist the first vehicle I go to look at is perfect enough to buy lol. So it is funny to me to see these stories where people have to look at so many different vehicles before finding one in good enough condition to buy it.

Great looking bike though dude. Glad you got it home ok. I love the blue. Looks really clean.
I was in the same boat as you.

Beat on my 01 for 3yrs solid, yearly heavy maintenance from 12k milage per season.

Always wanted the 05/06 and imported it for way less in way better condition than i could've found anywhere within ontario.

First changes i did was new '13 zx10 master cylinder (thx to fiancee for giving up spare parts), ss lines, ebc HH brake pads, 5.1 fluid, scrubbing each caliper piston AND a 2011 zx6r shock since the 05/06 have the heaviest spring that even was too stiff for my 200lbs fiancee.

I was just as proud of my bike purchase, took pictures every step of the way!

I was excited with my purchase and couldn't help but to take pictures haha. I was researching about changing the MC and will get to it eventually. In the next 2 months I will be buying Core Moto SS lines for her. I loved the ones I put on the 01 so I will stick with 'em. Still need to get tires, brake fluid, oil and filter and probably new brake pads. Just need to decide what pads I want to go with. Your bike looks great by the way. :)

Overall, that looks like a really clean bike. Congratulations.

The front tire looks like it is past the end of life, to me...... maybe it's the photos. What sort of tread depth have you got over the center of that tire?

Just asking so you don't end up with an issue that might be avoided.

Nice bike! looks great in blue. Thanks for your service also.

How do you like the plate mounted to the swingarm? I might have to do that

Thanks man! That front tire is still good for like 3 track days :rotfl On a serious note, yeah that tire is beyond its life. I already planned on replacing both front and rear ASAP.

I don't mind having the plate mounted there but I don't know how Mr. Policeman is going to like it there. If need be I will relocate it to a more visible place.
Thanks for your service.

Sounds like you were an educated buyer and got rewarded nicely for it. Good find!

A lot of my knowledge came from right here at home on zx6r.com :)

There is a yoshi bracket that enables you to place a fender eliminator under the exhaust.

I have a used bracket sitting around, but i'm across the globe :laugh

That is for someone that is 200lbs without gear.
The stock one would have been perfect for me if it was new, it was 9 years old and that made it way too soft. Something else was wrong...

Have a test ride before you start changing everything (ok the tires are past their lifetime but the rest of the stuff). I have the oem mc that havent been touched for 10 years, i had the oem brake lines and calipers - they were almost 10 years old too. They were still good. Ok, not perfect, not crisp, not for racing, but for street riding or relaxed track riding, still good enough. I would acually say those brakes were better then on the 2011 fz8 i sold last summer. These bikes are made to be far better then most of us, and in most cases they are. Even when they are out of shape, they are better then we need, so dont rush off buying stuff you dont need, those money can make you happier on a track, with a better tire, with a new helmet or something else that does more for you :)

Congratulations on your new bike!

my brakes were at like 20% compared to the setup i had on my old j model.

I could touch the lever on the bar when pulling and it barely got me to a stop.

Fluid change/bleeding didn't give much improvement, new brake pads with rotors sanded off didn't do much either and i know what new brake pads feel like.

MC helped
SS lines helped All steps done one at a time, felt the differences
scrubbing caliper pistons helped

only bleeding them again with the caliper held up finally got them alright.

I've done everything except changing the seals in the calipers. My weakpoint still are those calipers.

Is this bike in the back of a minivan? lol
Yes, but an oversized uplander.
tail had 1/4 space when loading, windscreen had to come off.
There are two other things I did to the bike so far. One being the SME (props to Laggy for the SME) because one of the previous owners removed the servo motor and cables and the FI light was on. That annoyed me lol. The other was the jumper mod (props to 09 ZX-6R). I really can't wait for the warm weather to get here. I am itching so bad to ride her :laugh

I have to do the jumper mod myself. I share your feelings on the warm weather getting here, I want to get back on two wheels but I keep getting snow up here

Yeah I feel ya there! I am in PA and right now we are dealing with drifting snow and below zero temps. This SUCKS :laugh
