Looking to buy a ZX-6r!

Hey all, so I'm looking to buy a zx-6r 2011 in green/black. I currently own a Honda CBR250r 2012, and looking to move up in engine size. I've been riding for about 2 years now and just want something with a bit more power.

Anyways, a kid i know in town is selling his 2011 ZX-6r. At first i thought he told me it was a 2009, but then after doing research i realized it was a 2011. When I confronted him about it, he said it's a 2011... I could have been mistaken but I'm pretty sure he told me it was a 2009..

So the bike has approx 4k miles on it. It looks fairly new, but there's a scratch on the rear seat. I feel like the bike has been dropped before. I took it for a test ride and it rode fine. The cosmetics seem okay and I really didn't see anything wrong other than the scratch on the seat.

So he's asking $7k... He has extra gear too which he wants to throw in. A helmet, jacket, pants and gloves, but I don't need that...

My questions are, is this a standard price range for this year? with this mileage?

Do i need to look into first service costs as well? The tire tread looks fine, and the bike rides like it has 4k miles on it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome!

I am sure others will chime in but here is my input
1) 4k miles on the tires means you will need a new set rather soon. (Will run you about $350 installed)
2) For a 2011 $7k is slightly high...especially if cosmetically it is not "Mint" condition, although the mileage is about right.

Its not a "bad" deal.....but I think you can do better...like say $6500 for his bike, or cough up an extra few $$$ and buy a brand new "left over" 2013/2014. I see you are in NJ and there should be plenty of new ones left on our side of the pond with all this snow at decent discounts.

Also...I understand he is throwing gear in to sweeten the deal.....if you don't have gear that could save you a couple of $$$ so in that case $7k would be an Okay deal. :)

p.s. if the bike was dropped the value "drops" too....so $7k should be out of the question at that point
There's no way that I would pay $7k for a 4 year old bike with 4k miles. Especially if you think it's been dropped. For a 2011 zx6r, I would maybe pay $6k if it hasn't been dropped. It sounds like this kid doesn't know what he's talking about so I would have a hard time trusting what he says. By the way you described this bike, I wouldn't pay anymore than $5k, but that's just me.
Agreed with above ^^^

OP- forgot to mention I bought a brand new left over 12' for $6400.....so 7k is not something I would pay.

Like I mentioned though...gear could be worth some money to you...but then you lose money on a new set of tires. Plus...if its been dropped walk away from it unless its a "Sick" deal
I mostly agree with what zx6ixxer said, it doesn't sound like an awful deal but I wouldn't pay $7K for it. Assuming it has NOT been dropped, I'd try to drop it closer to 6, and take the gear even if you don't want it, worst case you can sell it to get a few hundred $$$ back. If it has been dropped, I wouldn't pay anywhere near that either, and my offer would all depend on what damage I could find. 4k miles is nothing.

^^^ If it's been dropped then don't bother buying it unless he drops the price significantly.

thanks all. yeah this definitely gives me a better perspective on this all. I'll give you an update on what the kid says. I'm going to send him a text today. He told me he wanted me to give him a "security deposit" to let him know that I'm serious about buying the bike! HAHA! .

I'm going to get $5k cash and show up at his house, he lives around the corner from me. I'll then hopefully be able to get him down to that, or at most, I'll pay $5500. I'm just looking to get a really good deal on it. that's all.
You sure he even has it paid off? Yeah 5 sounds more like it. I gave 6250 for my 2012 a year ago with 1500 miles on it.
$5-$6 is what I'd try to talk him down to, without the gear.
