So I was forwarded this video by Nick Gnaime this morning. Wanted to put it out to all of you. If you're in California then you already know the benefits. However, even most drivers in this state do not know it is legal here. Mostly because they aren't from Califonia originally. Lane splitting is legal in almost every part of the world. And for good reason.

Agreed.

I'm all for legalizing lane splitting if traffic is completely stopped at lights, or during bumper to bumper traffic jam when cagers aren't able to change lanes.

Mhmm sounds like lately California hates its motorcyclists with a passion :/ Although I agree that lane splitting is a must sometimes for bikes, it shouldn't always be done just because its legal. Common sense will go a long way but just as there are dumb cagers I think we can agree there are some bikers out there that shouldn't even be near a motercycle let alone lane splitting lol. All ima say is more power to you guys and just be smart about it.

Totally agree...

I will only slplit traffic when it's below 35mph or at a dead stop. Also to get to the front of a line of cars at a light. And never do I go more than about 10mph more than the traffic around me.

You will get mushed. Not because of the bad driving, but because of a-holes. People
around here are so caught up with manners that they become infuriated when you cut
in line or they mash brakes and get scared or something. It literally creates chaos on the roads.

Part of the biggest thing with lane splitting is that too many riders will be splitting lanes way faster than 15 to 20 MPH above the bottled traffic. (I understand that those individuals safety is on them) but it is also in the person that they hit. And gives the rest of us a bad name. (I am not fully done with the video.)
I would like to experience this lane splitting though. I think it does make sense.

The first two weeks I started riding I was stuck behind traffic contemplating if I could fit between two cars. One day at a stop light I said fuck it I'm goin for it once I passed a few cars, I was like " holy shit there's this much space in here" anyhow I've been doing it ever since. look ahead, look for drivers not paying attention. It's fairly easy to spot the drivers that are idiots.

I think lane splitting is actually a lot safer than being Stuck behind a car with another car right behind you. Most accidents in traffic are rear end collisions. Yes I know the responsible thing to do is have an exit strategy incase you see someone not stopping behind you. What about if the car behind you safely stops, you relax and think the danger is done but the car behind him doesn't.

I would never split lanes in Miami. Even in stop dead traffic people here are so stupid and just mean that they will somehow get in front of me at the worst possible moment and sometimes on purpose just because they are stuck in traffic.

I wonder if it is even legal in Florida? I have seen the fuzz doin it, but they usually don't write themselves a ticket. :O

How cool...that vids filmed all around my neighborhood. Those are the streets I ride on and thats the freeway I take to work and back. It takes me between 1 and 1 and a half hours to get home from work in my car depending on traffic. It takes me 30 to 40 mins on my bike. Lane splitting kicks ass!!

Cause in Europe it's very hard to get your drivers license, owning a car there is a luxury, so the drivers are more responsible and aware of road rules than drivers in USA. Here in USA a monkey can get a license and people on the road are very rude (break checks, tailgating, cutting off, speed matching, lane blocking, passing on the right, passing at intersections, violating whites and double yellows etc) And absolutely no regard for motorcycles. Motorcycle riders aren't any better btw. I can understand young generation, sport bikes etc, but 70% of the riders are Harley/cruiser assholes. Just a different mind set, different mentality here. Its like it's always a competition on the road. They would die on the first day if they tried lane splitting in NYC. Love NYC, hate driving there

It's more of a discretion thing. One of those charges they can hand out for almost anything. Like you said though, I bet any attempt to challenge in court would be an easy win. As long as you weren't doing a wheelie while lane splitting. :lol

Never lane split once when I rode in Ohio. It's a whole different ball game here in Florida. I agree with the madness ZXROM mentioned. The fiance got rear ended a week after we moved here by a guy 2 cars back. Could've just as easliy been me. I watch my ass when I do sit in traffic which is 90% of the time. The 10% that I do ride to the front I'm extra cautious of some idiot that might wanna open a door cuz I'm moving past. I do feel more comfortable going to the front if it's a group of us.

Here in Chicago, it's illegal. With that said, I lane split on every single ride. Never been ticketed for it and a few cops have seen me do it, but they never payed me any mind.

I'm all for lane splitting, personally. Like any other aspect of riding, there is a certain level of caution one must excersice while doing it.

I have been on both sides of the asshole/safe rider coin. On the asshole side, I've lane split with a large group of riders at 140+mph. On the other side, I've been in bumber to bumper grid lock traffic and lane split at 10-15mph just to get through the shit.

I'm not proud of the asshole side and MOST of those days are past me but like I said before, lane splitting is a great idea that is useful if done responsibliy.
