How many miles is too many?

It's funny because 15k is my annual average mileage. I'm lucky enough to live in area where you can ride pretty much 365. I've managed to clock 35k on my 2014 636 by September 2018, that's with riding another 2 bikes pretty much daily.

Gotta share my philosophy with RJ here. If you've paid for it, use it. No point spending big dosh on something and keeping in fresh for resale. Bikes are not rare alien tech any more, they are available anywhere with little bit of civilization.

Also people don't realise that basic maintenance is dirt cheap if you do it yourself and only requires some basic tools and skills.

As for OP's question - you need to consider what you're buying. Majority of high mileage Euro bikes will be money pit compared to Jap's. Maintenance is key factor here. If you wanna buy used, search for model flaws first. With certain makes and models there's always some problems after certain mileage. Research, research, research and then buy.
