How do you measure fork oil level?

Haven't done it on my Kawasaki but on my Yamaha it was from the top of the tube with everything assembled and the fork compressed. Measured with a digital caliper (the kind you can pick up at Harbor Freight for cheap) using the depth part of the tool extending down till it came up with something on it - kind of like a dipstick but want to find the top of the fluid. Remember the shock should be compressed.

Hopefully by now you are not totally confused.
