Help. Not happy when she warms up

642 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  2y4life
Just got the bike in January and it's been running fine in the cooler weather but now that it's in the 60s it idles fine till about 160 degrees then the rpms start dropping and it dies. I let it cool off alittle and tried to go around the block and it died when I would stop. Around what temp does the fan kick on cause I don't think it is?
Any help is appreciated.

the fan itself is turned on based on what the coolant temperature is, not the engine temperature so every time it comes on it varies somewhat.

That being said mine USUALLY turns on around when my indicator reads around 200-205 if memory serves correct.

"When the coolant temperature goes up beyond 96 ∼ 100°C (205 ∼ 212°F), the radiator fan switch conducts to operate the radiator fan." -Straight from the Service Manual

After it is fully warmed up have you tried adjusting the idle screw to see if that helps? It may just need to be adjusted a bit after the engine is fully warmed up? That's my no spending money "quick fix" guess without tearing into stuff ha.

Edit: Sorry I re read that and it did kinda come off as rude haha. Most people think that its the temperature of the "Engine" like the block that the indicator shows..I said that just for extra emphasis I guess lol.
Here is the service manual for the J series Kawasaki if you don't already have it, provided by EvilTwin here on the forumshttp://support.bazzaz.net/service_manuals/ZX600J8F.pdf
You could look into some good information with it.

Check the idle screw/adjuster. I had the exact same thing happen except it would die at around 140-148. Then if I restart it, it dies within 10-15 seconds or immediately if I gave it throttle
I adjusted the idle to 1500 but when it get to 160 plus it just wants to bog down and die. I'll try going up more tmrw I guess.
And I know it's the coolant temp I was just sayin that's when it craps out.
I've been reading the manual since I got it. Just thought I'd ask incase someone has had the same problem. thanks guys.
yeah man we are happy to help. Let us know what happens!

I would check the simple things first. Raise the idle as mentioned and check your air filter. Colder air is denser (thinner) than hot air. Since hot air is thicker, it doesn't move as well through your air filter and the other systems that push air into the engine.

Our bikes are 11 years apart but had the same problem, raised the idle and she stopped stalling.

Fan shouldn't kick on until way later, above 200 me thinks. I don't see how it could be an issue.

Thanks Red! I was just thinking maybe I should check the air filter.
The guy I got it from said he just had the carbs cleaned so I figured the filter should be good but you never know.
Think I just figured it out! Been beating my brain trying everything and noticed the choke was alittle tight so I loosened it up and let the bike run a good while adjusted the idle and it ran good. Gonna take it for a ride after work to make sure but I think that got it. Wasn't jumping at all. Thanks a lot guys!

Glad it was something simple
