Hello again!

So, yesterday I picked up my new bike :) Its a 2005 ZX636 c1h with 3450 miles.

I got the bike from a guy up north (UK) and had to ride it 7 hours home.
After about 2 hours I started to notice a strange fluttering noise, it started out quiet at about 7000rpm and then gets louded and faster the faster I go. It 'flutters' in perfect time with the engine.

So i had 5 hours of riding like this so I check a few things. When the noise is present and very loud, as soon as i pull the clutch in the noise stops, then kicks back in once the engine is engaged again.

There also seems to be an excessive amount of engine oil (not lube) coming off the chain. Its splatted small dots of oil over the rear shocks and tail fairing.

Really not sure what to do or where to start? Any help would be greatly appreciate. Can supply pics if requested.

Thanks guys!

Sam

This flutter noise... does it also happen when the bike is in neutral?

For the oil, best thing to do would be to temporarily remove the front sprocket cover. Give the engine a good cleaning and inspect it often after every ride to see where the leak is coming from.

Hi mate, not sure about the noise but when some chain lubes get warm they can fling of the chain onto tail fairings and shock etc....and give the impression of motor oil as look like thin/watery dark dots etc (when warm)....not saying this is 100% what ur experiencing but make sure it isn't the chain lube before you really panic. Def needs looking at with the noise thing, but with that mileage providing it wasn't abused to hell it should be good. Maybe check the cam chain tensioner....I'm getting mine done Fri as mine has started making a ticking noise which is in time with revs etc. Also not saying if it's ticking it's def a cct...but more often than not it probably is as it's a common thing.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll take the cover off tonight and clean it out and keep an eye on her. And yes the noise does go away when in neutral. For some reason I was thinking it was something to do with the pistons firing, no idea why, im not a mechanic haha.
I'll get the cam chain tensioner looked at this week, and yeah the lube thing may make sense, guess it would get pretty hot after 7 hours haha.
Off to spain on her in a couple of weeks so getting nervous :p

If it goes away in neutral probably isn't cct but either way have it looked at to find source of that noise. Good luck mate

If the noise happens when in gear, but not when in neutral (or with the clutch engaged), it's probably not the engine (could still be, I suppose, but much less likely). I'm a little lost on what you mean by a "fluttering noise" but there are a couple people on here who are excellent mechanics and give great advice - someone will help you out with more specific ideas, I'm sure. Good luck

It sounds like its coming from the engine / chain area. It was so loud I was genuinely scared the thing was going to blow up. The fluttering sound is hard to describe, but it sounds like a mid to high pitch humming sound, lile really fast, it starts of quiet around 5000 revs then when I accelarate the exhaust noise takes over, but when I maintain a speed it comes back, louder the faster im going. In reference to the sparks plugs, im not too sure, havent had a look in there yet as its pissing it down today :(
Thanks for your help guys!

I guess the best way to descibe the sounds would be, a mid to high pitch helicopter sound... if you get me? like if you hear a helicopter over head, then you speed that up and turn the pitch up abit. So these no scrapping sound or anything, or anything that sounds like it tapping something it shouldnt, just a really loud high pitch helicopter sound coming from the left hand side near the front sprocket cover (I think)...

Just a thought, if it was the chain, when I pulled in the clutch whilst moving wouldnt the noise still happen? Think I need to visit a mechanic tomorrow :/

When the clutch is in the front sprocket would not be pulling the chain tight on one side... Right?

I think it might have to do with spark . Low miles and older bike means original plugs. I had similar noise when i changed my plugs. It would be noticeable when riding but in neutral or holding clutch in would disappear. Turns out one of the coils was loose. But your problem could be old plugs.

Ah, good point Ey3 :p

Ah ok ill give them a change as well, guess the more things I can eliminate the better. Cheers Escobar.

Will try and get some pics up here soon, and hopefully a video of the noise next time in out.

Just thought id post a quick update.
So i yook the bike to a mechanic, and Lockey was right, just a build up of gubk and massive paranoia!! Have cleaned it all up now and it seems to have stopped, will keep a close eye on it though. As for the noise, it didnt kick in whilst the guy was riding it so they dismissed it, so im taking it to my 'local' kawasaki dealership this week to make 100% sure. Im also taking it to a suspension specialist to 'personalise' the suspension setup for my needs/style of ride. Got new BT-016's going on this week so will get the chain adjusted then, and new spark plugs are in the post. I'll keep you posted and thanks again for the replys & help!
