*how much of gamble is this really?*

Mechanic recommended replacing the Cam Chain and Tensioner. Track Day approaching and I don't have the $1300 for labor costs.
If I track it in its current condition, is it a guarantee the chain will fail and I will crash?
If the chain and tensioner do fail will the engine be a total loss?

I can't stand the thought of selling my track day ticket at Thunderhill on their new 5mile track with 30min sessions.

My bike has 27xxx miles and I have done 6 track days in the last 12 months.

No way to predict if it will fail for sure or not. Assuming he knows what he is talking about and is correct about it being worn out it could fail. If it dose the engine will be a total loss most likely. These are interference engines. The pistons a valves will collide if that cam chain fails.

About the only way to wear these chins out is to run them too tight. 27k miles is nothing for them.

What makes you think it's bad? Is it ticking loudly? My CCT was ticking very loudly until I adjusted it last night. Back to its normal self, purring like a kitten. :)
