I hooked up my battery today with a battery tender, cheap Wal-Mart type. In the manual for the charger and the manual for my bike it says to hook positive to positive and negative to a place on the chassis. When I do this I get no charge. I've tried many places within about 8 inches of the positive terminal. If I hook negative to negative on the battery it appears to charge. The manual for my bike says to hook negative to the foot peg but I don't have anywhere near enough cable. Any thoughts? What will it do if I keep it hooked to the negative on the battery?

Absolutely nothing just hook it up to the battery, Just make sure it's the type of charger that floats it so you don't overcook the battery. You want it to cycle charge it and turn itself off when it's full I hardwired mine to the battery itself and just leave it plugged in since mine is just a trackbike now. The charger cycles itself.
