Hey guys!

I have found a set of used Apex clip ons with the 3 inch rise adjustability for a great price, and I am curious just how much difference they can make on a stock set up (stock cable lengths, no cutting plastics). If I get them and can only move them up an inch, I'd rather keep the stock ones and save the money. So my question to you guys is, if you have these how much were you able to raise the bars without having to modify anything? I have a non ABS model.

Update: For now I ended up going with these off amazon

Not sure how they are going to fit but they look pretty good and with prime (free returns) you can't go wrong. They seem pretty similar to the Apex kit minus the adjustable tube angle, but for $50 bucks cheaper than the cheapest beat up used set of Apex bars they fit the bill.

Nah they are $50 cheaper than a beat up used set of Apex I found on ebay ($150). I will hold judgement until I actually have them in my hands, but I have never been one to jump the gun and overgeneralize "made in china" equating to garbage. From your posts in other threads its pretty clear you believe that though. If the fasteners are garbage I have 304 stainless hardware to replace them with.

Regardless that isn't really the point. I am going to give them a shot and see if they are a good set of clip ons for the money. Im willing to bet they will be just fine. Without modifying the cables and fairings an inch of rise at the clamp is all you can really get. However the angle of the bars makes the bar end height much higher than the stock bars. As I said, I can always send them back if they are inadequate.

Man I feel sorry for you, Im glad I dont have such a pessimistic view of the world. I'm not here to change your mind. I will just smile, nod, and wish you a nice day.

Anyway, the clip ons will be arriving today so I will post my findings and some pics of what I receive. Really looking forward to it.

Got the clip ons, they feel solid and have some weight to them. Of course I wont know if ones going to snap as im blasting down the freeway, but I sure hope it wont :ROFLMAO:. I didnt have any torque specs for the bolts but they are all 6mm so I went with 12Nm which seems to do the job. Of course I used loctite on everything as well. It took a while to get everything fitted right, and I cut 15mm off the ends of each bar to shorten them a bit. I had to reroute some wires, and the brake line wasnt long enough. To fix this, I rerouted the line that usually goes from the master to the left caliper and had it go straight down to the right caliper instead. I swapped the double long banjo bolt from the left to right side and bled the system, which gave it the perfect amount of slack.

The bars are almost flat compared to the stock ones being heavily slanted downwards, and I have them turned out more (its pretty much the only position they would fit). I was blown away by how much of a difference this makes when riding. Of course I am not bent over as much, however the main difference is in the confidence and city riding. Having the wide flatter bar layout gave me a lot more control and leverage over the front of the bike, which makes it feel like a hooligan machine around town, almost like a naked bike. Its a lot more playful and enjoyable to throw around and have fun on. Keep in mind, I come from 10 years of riding nakeds and supermotos so thats why I naturally seem to prefer that kinda feel, but its not for everyone. If these bars ever fail or I want to upgrade to something riverszzr would approve of, I wouldnt hesitate to spend the money now that I know how much it transforms the bike.

A few notes about the setup. I would bring the bars in about 25mm each so my hands arent as far apart but that would cause the clutch and brake lever to interfere with the mounting hardware of the clipons, so maybe the Apex ones wont have that issue. Also, there are noticably more vibrations coming through the bars now. Maybe its because I dont have weighted bar ends yet, but I have seen that issue reported with all aftermarket clipons.

Clip-ons look great. From my experience the lack of downward angle make a big difference even if the inside mounting point doesn't move much.

I will have to somewhat agree with @riverszzr about stuff from China. Their big problem is lack of quality control. They are capable of making very hight quality things (iPhone for example) but where the Japanese have a national culture of high quality and always improving the Chinese do not. I have seen some amazing stuff from China but in general am very cautious. Apex ill have a certain quality of material that the ones you purchased may or may not have and sometimes is difficult to tell. I did have a nice set of shortie leavers from China that I really liked. My favorite was the wiring kit for my trailer. After a few months started having trouble with the lights. On some of the wires, but not all, the wire literally disintegrated into white powder inside the isolation! Even 4 feet from a connector! Last time I used the trailer I had to replace another segment of wire - had replaced all of it I thought but still had a short section.

I'm not hating on Chinese, I have a Chinese daughter-in-law who I love very much and is great. She has a PhD and we have been to China and visited her family and have seen places were very few westerners go. We met lots of very nice people and were a curiosity in many places - people would want their pictures taken with us. She comes from a middle class family who has endured way more than I have. When my son started dating her one of their concerns was "Americans are immoral". LOL what would you think if all you saw of America was movies and politicians.

Oh I fully agree, rivers is just overly aggressive for no reason. But yeah I still am considering going to Apex bars now that I see how big of a difference they make. I don't 100% trust the Chinese stuff cause I have experience with their metallurgy being trash. But for now it's alright. For less than 100 bucks I'm very happy, but if they had a bit more adjustment it would be nice.

China has the world's largest motorcycle population and probably makes more of those parts/gear than any other country. We can all agree that China is not the most reputable country for quality parts but that does not mean that everything from China is garbage. My Chinese steering damper cost 70 dollars and has been working flawlessly for over a year. When buying Chinese parts it's good practice to research the supplier and parts prior to purchase to ensure the best chance of getting quality parts.

I don't understand the hate toward the Chinese. As a capitalist I understand the importance of a free market where the cheapest labor is utilized to make the cheapest parts and maximize profit.

Having said all that, good luck with those cheap ass clip-ons dude. (joking of course)

My sentiments exactly. I looked into the brand and they seem solid, they make a lot of other motorcycle parts as well and have a huge catalog. Its a shame rivers has to be so difficult over something trivial. Just smile and nod :LOL: Hopefully being on his blocked list means I dont have to see his garbage all over the website.

I found these which seems to be the perfect middleground between the fully adjustable (and more bulky) Apex and the solid mounted helibars. The are side mounted which is nice because they are a bit closer to the rider and stay out of the way of the fairings. Seem well made too, so if I ever switch away from the amazon clip ons I will most likely get these. My only gripe with the amazon clip ons is because of the way the mounting position works, the levers cant be slid all the way towards the center so they are about an inch wider per side than I would like. Now is that difference worth paying an extra $130, that I dont really know.

Its actually funny, the night I finished installing those new clip ons I got sick as hell and have been sick since (tested positive for covid lmao) so I haven't even had a chance to ride with the new setup. Im hoping I will be good by monday, seems the worst of it has finally passed.
