Hey guys! New to the forum but have been reading a lot for a while now. I would have definitly taken this to a shop but unfortunately every Kawi dealer is booked for the next 3 weeks so I’m kind of stuck as I just want to continue riding.

I’ve had my zx6r for a few months now. It’s a 2013 that has nearly 3000 miles on it. (2100 when I got it) and it’s always had that weird ECU issue, I ordered a 2015 ecu from eBay and it’ll be here next week but for some reason, yesterday it started acting even weirder:

•the idle adjust all of a sudden stopped working. Can’t turn my idle up or down

•started to run even more rich than usual

•started to sputter a little bit. Nothing major but not like anything before

•the bike would die when I’m riding. I always had to have throttle otherwise it dies.

•it only dies when it hits 140. 5 times I’ve let it go cold then start it to warm it up and it dies immediately at 140 and it seems to warm up quick.

Things I’ve tried:

•checking all my fluids. They are all good, my gas is very low but the fuel light isn’t on yet. I’ve always used the recommended octane.

•disconnected the battery and waited to restart the ECU.

•and that’s about it.

Any suggestions why all of a sudden it has done this? The rpms lowering until it’s dead and it starts happening exactly at 140 degrees? The sudden richness and sputtering?

Thanks guys! When I install the new ecu next week I’ll let you know if that helps but this definitly seems like a bigger issue.

The dealer I got it from said they replaced the spark plugs when I bought it. I took their word for it but any ideas or suggestions would be great! I’m not the most mechanically inclined person but yeah just lmk!

Why is my bike dying at a certain temperature

Download the shop manual for your bike from this site. Free.

Check for codes. Free.

Report back. Also free.
I’ll do that first thing tomorrow. I don’t have any check engine lights or f1 lights, whatever they are called. Will I still get a code?

The idle adjuster is a mechanical link to the throttle bodies. It probably came loose or something. U should be able to tell whats wrong just by looking at it.

As for the bike shutting off n whatnot, it sounds like the common 2013 ECU issue. I think u should be fine once your new one comes in.

I just replaced the ECU. It starts up great now. Which fixes one issue. But still as soon as it hits 140 degrees the bike drops RPM and it still sounds stuttery. I’ll post a link with a video of it on YouTube! Idle adjuster still won’t work so that may be the next tackle.

Will the bike still die at 140° if u keep the throttle open?

Odds are good you unscrewed the adjuster linkage from the plate/ramp that makes the adjustment. I had a similar issue with the unstable idle when my battery was on the way out...... Wouldn't hold a stable idle when cold, and couldn't adjust it out. Couldn't slow the idle enough. Motor would oscillate between 1100, and ~1800. Mine was having issues charging the dying battery. It's been rock solid since I installed the new battery.

140 is likely the engine temp that triggers the mapping change in the ECU from 'cold' to normal operation. Runs richer below 140, like having a choke engaged. Default mapping, similar to 'limp home' mode.

1) what is the outside temperature in your local area?
2) is this 140 temp die out when the bike is idling or during normal operation?
3) you changed the ECU... why? what other mods have you done and why?

1: Average temp is around 80.

2: both

3: the 2013 I had had that weird programming bug that caused weird stalling starts. This started happening before i replaced the ecu. Other mods. None.

HalstonV, fix your idle adjuster. Thats your problem. Like RJ said, when the bike warms up, the ECU changes the mapping to lower the RPMs. Since your idle adjuster is broken and set too low, the bike just stalls when that happens.
