Hello everyone , i’m currently in the dumps . Went for a cruise today and about 90mph i lost power and heard my rod knocking BADDD!! I was wondering if anyone had info on what motors i can swap into my bike or parts from other motors that are compatible. Any help is greatly appreciated 💪🏼

Meh, probably cheaper to rebuild what you have and you wont have to fab up any mounts or splice a wiring harness.
What’s your budget for this?
But to answer your question, anything is possible. There is a parts compatibility thread you can search in the forum that might help you out.
Bummer. But like already stated. If the motor is still running and not sent a rod through the side of it

it’s almost always better and cheaper to just rebuild. Especially older like that. Finding that gen motor is going to be hard and prob also worn out. If you like the bike and plan to keep it. Rebuild and you know what you have and your good to go.
For reference, you can find this parts compatability thread pinned in the "mechanical and technical" section.

come on..........

fucking dolts...............

It is absolutely going to be cheaper to just buy a used engine from any J model ZX6R (2000-2002) or ZZR600 (2005-2008) than it is going to be to buy a new crank and rod and all the accompanying needed parts then do the work

that said........ what you get for yoor money time and investment is likely a better outcome to buy new parts and install them in your non windowed set of cases with the VIN that already matches your motorcycle title (ie engine number is required on the title transfer and when it doesn't match they refuse titel transfer- and to change it on the state records you need the a copy of the title from which the engine came.......... that is the hassle and expense here in Minneshithole as a result of all the stolen motorcycles to chop shops....maybe where you live is different?) but you have to pay fees to change that stuff

new crank.......................................................................................................................................... $1200
new rod............................................................................................................................................. $220 each x (?)
all new rod bearings, crank bearings, oil pump, gaskets, seals, piston rings........................ $800+

Did the piston hit the head?
did the valves get smacked?................... $45 each on intakes....................$75 each on exhaust
don't forget about the oil/filter, coolant, new plugs and everything else it will need---including a proper tune up service
You could easily and quickly add another $1000 or more

and then depending on miles and use/abuse.....what do all the other wear out parts look like, transmission, shift forks, clutch etc.....

then how competent are you to actually do the work properly? or do you have to pay someone to disassemble, clean and reassemble?????????

If you go out and just buy some used engine off the internet there is no telling what is going on with it, how it has been used and abused and neglected.......... I have stacks of them in my shed that were worse than the engines they were supposed to replace
but once in a while you can find a decent one, Do you feel lucky? well do ya?????????

My assumption was that the chances of finding an engine to just throw in that worked flawlessly out the gate and required nothing would be next to zero, requiring parts/time/labor anyway (which it seems you have plenty of experience with if you have stacks of them). So, buying an engine, then buying another or abandoning that idea would be more expensive than the rebuild anyway.

OP could otherwise buy another used bike for the same or slightly more than what it would take to replace all those engine components. Bonus points on a same model/year so he can use his current bike as a spare parts/donor as necessary.

Exactly. I said cheaper because I have seen guys buy several used engines this old just to end up worse off. I guess technically the initial cost will be likely twice maybe 3 times. . But twice the money for a brand new fresh built motor versus gambling to loose that half on buying junk. In my mind that sounds cheaper. But I have rebuild prob hundreds of engines and assuming I’d be doing the work myself . But who knows. Maybe he gets lucky.

And if it’s just a knock and caught early. Hell it may not even be a rod. Who knows what he is translating to knock. Some people don’t know what rod knocks sound like. . At the very least I’d tear into the motor before I spent anything to see where I’m at.

let me put it this way.........

99%of the population is completely incapable of disassembling, cleaning, inspecting and then putting an engine back together properly---let alone having the right tools and space and cleanliness to do it.......but I am sure there is a 20% or so of hacks who think they can do it and likely would try and fuck up 80 other things during the process and go on some forum or facebook page seeking help from other hacks and dolts..........

So if you have to pay someone to do this job.......... there goes atleast $2500 in labor
couple that with atleast $2500 in parts you are spending atleast $5000 on a bike worth on its best day $2500 (and we haven't seen this 22 year old used and abused wreck of a bike, it may only be a $1000 bike when it ran!)

Buying a used engine for say $1000 and slapping it in- is something maybe 20% of the population can do.....some far better than others!

Nobody in their right mind would even consider spending $5k+ on a bike worth less than half that! unless they are stupid--thus, not in their right mind.........

and when a rod bearing goes knock knock knock it always means a crank and rod and oil pump and all accompanying parts...always............... and often means PTV contact
and they don't just let go for no reason- the engine has suffered major neglect and abuse to go kaboom! So it'll need more than the basics.......

funny.................. a quick search and I found 9 engines for this bike, some with warranty some with none, some with free shipping some not free shipping
price ranges from sub $700 to over $1500
scattered all over the country- depending on the OP's location he potentially could go pick one up

Surly to god there is more than 1% of men that could manage to rebuild a motorcycle motor? Hell my 19 year old boy completely rebuilt his gixxer motor 20k miles ago and has rebuilt least 4 car motors and I call him a moron several times a day. You make it sound like rocket science. I mean I hate everyone also but has the population really got this bad this quick that a decently capable man can’t rebuild a motor for the first time and not fuck it up? Jesus all knowable learnable information can be accessed with a cell phone lol

But then again I did show a grown man how to use a ratchet wrench. And another how to pop a bicycle chain back on just in this last year. So maybe I’m giving more credit than is due.
Knowledge has a wide spectrum. I'm sure there are plenty of guys and gals who could explain away the thermodynamic principals of a rocket, whilst being unable to change a car tire.

It's not that people are dimwits; most just don't have that kind of exposure or the need/drive to learn how to do these things.
Well. You do have a point there. I helped a lady with a flat once. And when I went to Jack it up I noticed a whole grown man sitting in the car. I thought she was alone so took me by surprise so I said. “Are you just gonna sit there while I do this”. He said. “Omg you’re so right. That would be so dangerous if I stayed in”. He jumped out wearing what I later learned was a romper. Pranced over to the curb and sit and waited.
He missed the point of my smart Ass comment.

do you know what a romper is?

Oh man, I sure do know what a Romper is. In fact, if a guy wears one it's called a Rompim (Romp-him). It was a huge thing like 10 years ago.

They used to tell you how to adjust valves in the owners manuals

Now they tell you to not drink the battery acid..........

case closed, yes..... people are that fucking stupid

It would be quite an accomplishment to drink the electrolyte from an AGM battery…

Case in point...............

This is what the dumbing down of America turned into, a bunch of worthless losers who are incapable of doing anything but being parasites and losers...........

That "man" should have been beaten more as a kid!!!!!!!!!!! he certainly needs it now more than ever, but had it happened young he would already know.................. he needs to learn to man the fuck up!
