Hi everyone!
So, some of you might remember I mentioned my zx-6r ground-up build project when I introduced myself. Originally I wanted to go for a 2002 A1P, but parts’ availability and a cheaper road tax (it’ll be a second bike, so I’ve got to think budget…) meant that I’ve decided to go for a 2001 J2 model.
At the time I only had the electric loom, which I’d placed on a board and labelled so I could figure out what the layout is.
In the meantime, I’ve sourced the switchgear, tail light, shock linkage (pristine), the rear subframe and swingarm (both serviceable but a bit rough, with some corrosion/marks), and yesterday a main frame in really good conditions has arrived!:BigGrin
Now the question is: because the main frame only presents some corrosion at the end of the upper shock mount (so not visible with the bike assembled) and it’s otherwise in very good conditions, only the swingarm and subframe would actually need repainting in order to achieve a good cosmetic result. Do you reckon a good spray shop can match the main frame’s “champagne” finish successfully if doing only subframe and swingarm, or would I have to get all three of them resprayed or powdercoated together to avoid differences in tone? Given my limited budget, I would tend to avoid fixing something that ain’t broken, so to speak...:angel

The owner before me buying the same model had the frame polished. It looks stunning. A little aluminum polish can make it look like a mirror.

The polished frame idea sounds stilish, but I wanted to retain the original look as much as possible...

Hi guys!
Just a brief update on the (slow) progress so far: I'm in the process of replacing the swingarm bearings before starting to assemble the frame parts.
With regards to the swingarm and rear subframe needing repainting, the swingarm although a bit rough can wait, and it proved cheaper to actually source a subframe in good conditions (£30 shipped on Ebay) and ready to install as it is instead of respraying the one I had...
I also bought a cheap used rear shock to use during the build and replace with a better quality unit as soon as the budget allows (will give the upper mount and spring a fresh coat of paint) and a set of yokes (again, to be refurbished and be treated to new bearings before they go on the bike).
Once main frame, rear subframe, swingarm/rear suspension, and front yokes are put together, the "skeleton" of the Ninja will be finally able to be put on paddock stands, and it will be time to start adding the nervous system (main loom)!
Next on the to-do list is a different CDI unit as I realised the one I have is for a 636 A1P model and not a 599 J, and find a name for the bike!:BigGrin

Today, for the first time ever, I've stripped the old paint from sidestand, sidestand bracket, and upper shock mount and resprayed them with Tough Black (satin finish).
I started off with these "lesser" components first to see if I was any good at it before moving on to bits that are always under your eyes, like the upper yoke or the upper fairing bracket, but I'm well pleased with the result!:BigGrin
They're still curing, but what do you guys think?

So, work continues, albeit slowly...
Frame, rear subframe, steering, and rear suspension/swingarm are now together, and she's starting to look like a motorcycle now!:smile
The other pic is the top yoke after spraying it with etch primer, soon to be sprayed in satin black.

How challenging is it replacing the rear sub frame? I may be picking up a 2001 with a bent sub frame and making a project out of it. Seems like an easy swap from the pics but not sure.

After you remove the plastic cover and seats....

inner fender, battery and wiring then just the 4 bolts that hold it on.............. It is not overly difficult nor super time consuming but I would take a few pictures of how wiring is run etc once the tail plastic is removed before going further to ease the re-assembly process
