Hey guys, I just picked up an 07 ZX6R, and I'm pretty sure it's running very rich.

The bike is stock, minus the jumper mod. The exhaust reeks of fuel, and I'm getting about 25mpg, doing normal riding.

I'm going to pull the tank tomorrow and inspect the vacuum/intake lines for leaks. I may seafoam the bike as well, to inspect for exhaust leaks.

I'm posting to get some opinions on what to look for and check on the bike. Any input would be appreciated.

What exhaust is on the bike?
Does it have a power commander?
Have you done a plug chop?
How many miles are on the bike?
What type of weather are you riding the bike in?

This is the type of info we need to help you
Thanks man,

OEM exhaust, though I have noticed there are no cables for the exhaust valve on the undertail muffler.
No power commander
What is a plug chop? The previous owner may have, IDK.
about 9500 miles

I'm in Dekalb, and work in Aurora.

A plug chop is running it, under load, up to just before red line and and hitting the kill switch.

Promptly, pull the plugs to see what they look like.

wet brownish black plugs = running rich...too much fuel
ashy dry white plugs = running lean...too much air

I don't know much about the stock exhaust so you may want to wait for a more experienced member to chime in.
Mine just turned 10k miles and don't have thes issues.

I was leaning towards it running rich from a modded exhaust, but that usually makes them run lean.

I dunno man

Well, here's where I've gotten so far. I have to go get a long 4mm or 3mm allen to take off the air box assembly, but here's the joy of buying a second hand bike, and what I've found...

This ground was not connected:

I'm guessing there's a hose that comes off this sensor:

Also, this line has been cut, but it looks just like a vent line.

I'm going to have to take a look at the shop manual to see what that ground is for, if/where there's a hose for that sensor. The air cleaner is pretty clean, and there's no blockage in the ram air tube.

I'll keep you guys posted as I dig more into this. Unfortunately, I have to go to work for a little, so I cannot get more done til later today.

that sensor is supposed to have a hose running to it. it's your map/atmospheric pressure sensor. that's likely the bulk of the problem.
I would definitely tighten the ground before you fry some electronics.
The vent hose being cut not so big of a deal as long as it's routed properly.

Thanks for the info so far guys. I checked the shop manual, to check the ground connection, and connected that back up.

I'm hoping that the air pressure sensor hose, not being there, is the problem. I found where it goes to via the manual diagrams, and I'll inspect it tomorrow, once I pull the air box off.

I'm going to pick up some allen sockets on my way to work tomorrow, so I can pull more things apart. I've got pretty much every hand tool under the sun, from working on old broken Porsches, but this is really the first bike I've worked on.

Well, I got a chance to work on the bike this evening. The hose that was supposed to be coming from the air pressure sensor, was routed to the air box oil drain. This meant that crankcase oil and fuel/water vapors were going into my vacuum synchronization tubes.

I got some vacuum hose from the local auto parts store, and used it for the oil drain and also made a new tank vent line. The bike is missing the little oil catch can, so I routed the hose back up, to capture crankcase fluids.

Here's pics of the fun:

I'll take the bike out for a ride tomorrow, to see if this resolved the issue. I'd do it now, but I kinda had a few too many beers working on the bike.

The bike runs 10X better. The horrible un-burnt fuel smell is gone. It idles and runs smoother than before.

One of the grounds was for my coolant temp sensor. The gauge was spastic when I bought the bike, but the bike wouldnt overheat or anything. I'm guessing the other ground was for the fan switch.

Thanks again for at advice guys, and for what to check out.

Ima get back to riding.
