Difference between Kawi tick and "oh fuck" tick
My previous bikes (one was a 636) never had ticking sounds. But at idle rpm, there is definitely a ticking sound in my 08. Some say it's the normal Kawi tick... But as a previous Kawi owner I've never heard this before and frankly it sounds like bull. I mean why design engines that tick so much that people trademark it the Kawi tick? What could be the purpose?
I digress, I just want to know how I can tell if my tick is really okay (if a tick could ever be okay) or if it is actually a sign of a real problem. Bike is in great condition, fully serviced, 7k miles, etc. Tick is always there at idle and I can hear it when I lay off throttle. With throttle on the tick is not there. Bike fully warmed up, doesn't make a difference.
I'm tipping you still have the self adjuster cct in the bike then.. Swapping to a manual helps the kawai tick but does not get rid of it..
Yeah CCT is stock. That's just it? I guess I should be thankful it's just the tensioner.
i just did my valve clearances this weekend and when i put the stock CCT back in, it made more noise from the chain that it did before i pulled it apart. manually adjusted it, made it take up ONE ( JUST ONE ) click on the ratchet bit in it, and it's just a touch quieter ( cam chain noise wise, not valve tapping wise ) than it was before.
in case you were wondering i got the valves spot on and i'm proud as of it ;)
My '11 ticks like crazy. A friend told me about the 'Kawi tick' when I asked him to ride it. I'm glad to see he's not entirely insane.
Yes, the Kawasaki tick is normal.
You can pull the automatic tensioner out, reset it a few times to work the mechanism, reset it again and reinstall according to the manual and it may take up enough slack to make the tick go away or it may not. A manual tensioner is the way to go if you don't mind making minor adjustments ocassionally. I have 2 '08s with manual tensioners in both. It only takes 2 minutes to adjust one when it needs adjusting. Adjustments are something that shouldn't need to be done often though.
