Sunshine and the Phoenix - A Build Thread

As some may recall I started a thread after binning it at Laguna Seca back in December. https://zx6r.com/mechanical-technical...-makeover.html.

I really didn't end up doing a whole lot to the bike aside from a bearing and replace a few broken parts. So it wasn't much of a build. This thread will not die out as the bike being built is not my main bike. So I can work slowly and use this thread as a progression of what will become Phoenix. A 2012 ZX6R track/race bike that will be built from ground up.

If you need parts for a 2009-2012 just ask. I might not part with certain stuff but some stuff I will definitely consider selling.

So here we go....

Picked her up on Friday night and brough her home yesterday. She was a friend's bike and had a rod go through the case. I bought the rolling chassis... no engine. Initially I just wanted the fuel tank to replace the original tank that got bashed up in the crash at Laguna o Sunshine. Over the months I kept nagging and finally he just said...."why don't you just take the whole thing?"

Well okie dokie then. So this will not be some quick build. This thread might be getting updated this time next year. But the progression wI'll be documented for all to enjoy!

Brought her back to the house and off loaded. I didn't waste any time. It was tear down time. Threw her on the stand and went to work.

Forks and front wheel first

Brakes

After a beer.... went back pulling parts off.

Down to just frame, swingarm, triples, and shock.

Pulled the shock and linkage off and pretty much everything fits in a box now.

Well as long as my wallet and my imagination are on the same page.... it'll be as close to a MotoAmerica Supersport bike as I can muster.

I have the rule book and I've already started looking into things to do. There won't be any real engine work done, but things like porting and smoothin of intake passages is something I'll end up doing.

Would like to go Ohlins forks and shock but at the end of the day I'll settle of less lol.

Starting with frame.... swingarm and stem will get All-Ballz tapered bearings. Possibly powder coating to some color eventually

Painted up the Armor Bodies fairings and popped the green tank onto sunshine. Added a few stickers for more horsepower

Pulling the rotors off the front wheel. Eventually it'll get an aftermarket rotor.

Rear rotor and sprocket off. I've had a paint scheme in mind but sitting here looking at her the way she sits in thinking those wheels would look pretty rad if they matched that green tank

Brakes, throttle and clip on.

Bled all the fluid out of them.

More for the spare parts shelf.

After much contemplation about what to do with Phoenix I have come down to two potential projects.

Option 1. Build her into a totally bitchen track bike... ie: Tapered bearings in the frame, Ohlins shock, Ohlins cartridges in the forks, aftermarket (pretty much) everything. Full out race bike... that I probably won't race.

But I have a fun track bike... soooo....

Option 2. She becomes something out of a Mad Max movie. A mean as hell street fighter with upgrades to the suspension that would enable a little off-road braaapage. Crash cage, higher gearing, dirtbike bars, and you guessed it.... knobby tires. An urban assault vehicle if you will.

Kind of like this.

or this... (girl not included unfortunately)

Well it's a darn shame the girl isn't included but if you can build something near that Ducati, well that might be one of the sickest bikes I've ever seen!

I think that with your MotoAmerica contacts you'll be able to build a really nice race bike so I would go in that direction.

Anyone can make a decent track bike, with the required monetary investment. Do the off-road super sport. Don't see those everyday. Or ever, really.
