I Ride: 2007zx6r engine in 1998zx7 chassis
2007 zx6r engine in 1998 zx7

Hey all,

New member and first time poster, looking to get your thoughts on:

I had a 1998 ZX7 in which I had someone put a 2007 ZX6r engine. It's all up and running after lots of mods. 98 was completely gutted and we put in everything from 2007 like full engine n all electronics. We kept the gas tank from the 98 to match the fairings n all but put in an external fuel pump. The bike fires up and runs fine but the computer has a FUEL code on the dash. It's all good until this. Now gas flows out of the gas tank near the fuel cap. I think this is cuz of the overpressurization. For sme reason, the pressure release system doesn't work anymore and the gas flows out. This happens regardless if the bike is running or not or is cold ot hot. If I open the fuel cap, gas doesn't flow out. So, got a couple of Qs for ya:
1) will I need to use the new gas tank from the '07 with internal fuel pump n all? Would that fix the problem?
2) or can I just change the misfiring pressure release system on the '98 tank? Do you think that would fix the problem or would the problem come back again due to the high pressure from the fuel injection?

The guy who helped me do the swap and mods doesn't wanna help anymore, so any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks fr your help!!
Jason

Looking at both tanks you would have to mod the '07 tank because the mounting is very different and also the contour of the tank would be a problem; I would stick to option 2.

Thanks for the replies guys.

With the pressure release mechanism fixed under option 2, would the excess pressure be released without the tank exploding or rupturing due to high pressure? In the '98, due to the bike being carbureted, there wasn't a need for highly pressurized tank. So I wonder if the pressure release mechanism would be sufficient for the '07 system and the higher pressure.

The 2 outlet values under the tank are rigged ina way that they both attach to the fuel rail. I suppose this is to provide a closed pressurized system. So the only release is on top of the tank through the spring cap.

I wonder if I can find a fuel injected compatible gas tank from the '02-'07 zx6r that will be less of a mod to put on the '98 compared to trying and put on a '07 tank. Thoughts? I am ok with some contour differences as those are to be expected.

Try looking up on the repair manual to see what the diagram looks like for the '98 7r and the '07 6r under fuel system and reroute hoses accordingly. Your tank should not explode due to the build up of pressure, if anything the spring cap should take care of that.
