ZX6R 636 2002 Starting problem

Hi all,

Just bought the bike few days ago. Got a receipt from the seller which shows this service was performed in May this year:

Service made:
- Oil change including filter
- Carburetor cleaned
- Air filter exchanged
- new gel battery
- renewed spark plugs
- Brake fluid changed at the front and rear

After the service it was parked in the garage and not used for 5,6 months.

Now the bike starts with the choke on, but turns off as soon as I give it any throttle or if I turn the choke off. The bike still has half a tank of fuel which I think is atleast a few months old. If I keep the choke on, I can drive it in the first gear for a few minutes after a few tries, before it dies again for example when I stop at a red light.

From what I have searched online so far it seems like carburetor needs to be cleaned again. Should I try anything else first? Does it make sense to get rid of the old petrol and fill it with fresh ?

Hello and welcome!

You may need to set the idle speed higher (it could have been inadvertently set way to low after/during the maintenance).

It wouldn't hurt to drain the fuel if it is a few months old, or you could put some Star Tron in it.

This is how it sounds like when I let it idle for few minutes on choke and then try to Increase the throttle with the choke still on.

Youíve got clogged pilot jets from the bike sitting - most likely due to not adding a fuel stabilizer before storage. ALWAYS add a fuel stabilizer and make sure it is thoroughly run through before letting the bike sit; itís cheap insurance! Taking four carbs apart is not going to be fun!
