Just wondering what everyones thoughts are on the Shoei GT Air 2. I noticed its only got a DOT rating which always makes me a little nervous, knowing how lax that standard is. Anyone have any insight to this?

Go watch Brian Van's review video on it. He explains it in there. Basically they simply didn't submit the helmet for Snell certification because of the built-in drop down visor. I guess helmets that have that feature don't do well with some Snell tests. He doesn't really mention other details. But it's a $600+ Shoei helmet. My bet is it's gonna be plenty good as far as safety.

Snell actually changed their standard to make it safer for your brain, after Dexter Ford wrote this article for Motorcyclist magazine called 'Blowing the lid off'

Really good article. Got him black listed out of the industry. Helmet companies paid for all the ads in the magazine. They didn't like this getting out, at all.

Snell ratings are now very nearly on par with DOT. You want the softest, most crushable liner possible to limit brain trauma. Snell liners used to be much stiffer than DOT, because they were originally designed for auto racing. You can whack your head repeatedly on the exact same spot if you are strapped in, with a roll cage surrounding you.

Brain trauma occurs with sloshing motions that make your skill hit your brain. There is a much smaller percentage involving penetrators cracking skulls causing localised damage. That part is meant to be limited by the shell, not the liner.

Adding hardware that consumes liner volume reduces the space that can be crushed. Hinges, sliding rail systems, levers and knobs..... Similar to setting short blunt nails against your skull and hoping the hammer will miss them......
